Tom Grundy's Kathryn Weekend Visit April 2014 Trip Page

Kathryn needed a break from "real" life so she planned to come up for a weekend in Bishop. The weather looked a little iffy, and in fact when she got here Friday evening she only had my word that there were mountains nearby since they were obscured in clouds. That night it rained some too, but it was dry and sunny in the morning and both the White Mtns and the Sierra were blanketed with fresh white snow (I heard Mammoth got 2 feet through the weekend). There could be a cold wind throughout the visit, but also times of warm sun.

The Saturday plan was for some multisport action. We didn't do a whole lot of any one thing, but we did manage to do a little biking up to the trailhead and then hiking up to the summit of Tungsten Peak. This is a little peak compared to all the mountains around, but it was a cold windy morning, and the views were most excellent. The sunny lee of the summit rocks was quite appreciated. The biking downhill was a lot easier. Then we set up a slackline and did some acro in the park until we realized how hungry we were.

Smoothies and then fresh hummus on bagels reenergized us to trade out the bikes and slackline for the crash pads and climbing stuff and head out for some bouldering at the Happy Boulders.

Sunday we headed to the Owens River Gorge for some sport climbing. There were plenty of people there, but we were always able to find a climb to get on. Once the shade made things cold on the west side we went across back to the sun for more climbing and talking and stayed 'til that was in shadow. By the time we left we were the last people out.

We tried to go to the hot ditch for a much needed soak, but the water was only 93 F and didn't seem to be getting warmer very fast so we bailed on that (it sure is nice to have the hot shower option (I am getting soft)). Kathryn had to head back early Mon morning, but I think I managed to wear her down a bit physically and refresh her otherwise - at least that is how I felt.

In other news despite a cloudy Friday and a few more clouds and cooler weather throughout the weekend my solar setup was able to provide hot showers for 2 plus kept the floor at 70. I am guessing that this will be the last time through the rest of the summer that the hot water supply will be in any doubt.
